WINDSURF SPOTS

Lanzarote is one of the worlds best windsurfing destinations. With ideal weather conditions it is perfect for both beginners and experts. Many pros come here to train for competitions.

Las Cucharas beach in Costa Teguise, is a popular spot and has played host to the National funboard Championships - Course racing, slalom and wave categories. The best wind conditions for experienced sailors is during the summer when the Passat wind kicks in.

Las Cucharas Bay

This is probably the best known spot on Lanzarote. The wind is moderate near the shore but as you get out into the bay it blows harder. Because of the flat water conditions and strong, steady winds further out, this is the ideal spot for freestylers.
If you're more of a wave rider, the northern and easterly parts of the bay are great on the rising tide and provide some good swell. About 300 meters out from the point there's a wave break that can get pretty big on the right conditions. As a general rule the waves are OK for beginners but if you're unsure olease ask a local before you hit the water.

Los Charcos

To make the most of this run, start off at Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise heading in the direction of 'The Temple bend' 300 meters further. The waves break in 2 sections here. The Passat hits sideshore at this spot, and the waves are ridable. However Los Charcos is almost dry at low tide! Watch out for the strong currents on the bend, before you know it you'll be heading for the cliffs.

La Santa Lagoon

On the west coast offers beginners a sheltered safe spot to practice.

Orzola

Located at the north end of the island. This spot is only for experienced Windsurfers! It can be dangerous with sharp, unforgiving lava rocks and currents. best on an easterly wind (quite common direction here).

Jameos del Agua

The holy Grail for wave riders. Jameos is one of the toughest surf spots in lanzarote and is really only for the technically proficient. The waves break in various sections over the volcanic reef. To reach a take off site, you'll have to cross a volcanic rocky reef covered with sea urchins ;-). If you want to save your feet, wear reef boots. keep an eye on the sets and time your entrance and exit. On the low tide the waves and currents can get pretty hectic. With a rising tide and the right swell and wind, you'll get extremely long waves here. The prevailing wind here is the Passat that blows side-offshore, from the left. Sail sizes between 4,5 and 5,5 m2.

Famara

Located on the north west side of the island, Famara is a 3km long beach that is at it's best when the Passat wind blows from the east or a low pressure wind comes from the south during the winter. The waves can be demanding (sideshore wind conditions). Only a couple of locals tend to windsurf here, so you'll have plenty of space.

Playa Honda

Situated about 3kms south of Arrecife and close to the airport. This spot is dominated by strong Passat winds and flat sea conditions.

El Tiburon

Lies between Playa Honda and Playa Matagorda, El Tiburon is a reasonably good wave spot with the wind blowing side- to side-offshore.

Playa Matagorda

This spot provides flat water with bump-and-jump conditions.

Other spots

Obviously we have not listed all the possiblities above. You will just have to follow your own sense of adventure and discover them yourself...

In terms of what to wear in the water, wintertime visitors from northern Europe will be comfortable with a very light full suit or shorty, whilst summertime is boardshort weather.
