LANZAROTE
The Canary Islands
The Fortunate Islands is the name given to the Canarian Archipelago. The islands located off the west coast of Africa are blessed with an almost ideal year-round climate due to the warming influence of the Gulf-Stream and favourable trade winds.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the most northerly and easterly of the Canary Islands and is approx. 68
miles off the African coast. A number of other smaller islands lie to the north of Lanzarote. They consist of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara and Los Roques. All except La Graciosa are uninhabited.
The Island of 'Terrible beauty'
A series of volcanic eruptions took place in the south west of the island
over a period of 6 years from 1730 to 1736. This area occupies 1/4 of the islands land mass and has been declared a national park (Timanfaya National Park).
Lanzarote compared to the other islands is THE 'volcanic island'. It consists of about
300 extinct volcanoes, scattered lava fields and beautiful white and black sandy beaches. Also worth exploring are its many caverns, lava flows and craters.
Some of these natural phenomena have been turned into places of great
beauty and tourist attractions. Outstanding examples are Jameos del Agua (Lava chambers) and Cueva de los Verdes (Green caves).
Climate and Weather Data
The weather conditions are almost always favourable. In summer it can get very hot, whilst during the winter it can be cool and cloudy with spells of occasional rain.
COSTA TEGUISE
Lanzarote´s second most popular resort is situated just north of Arrecife in the north east of the island. The name literally translates into coast of Teguise, which was Lanzarote´s former capital.
Los Cucharas
The main beach, Las Cucharus, is famous for its perfect windsurfing conditions and is a wonderful white sandy beach where you can just kick back and enjoy the sunshine.
The resort also has the only golf course on Lanzarote and a large water park offering a diversion for the kids or partners-in-tow while you're windsurfing ;-). This is a great resort for those who just want to get away and relax but at the same time offers a multitude of activities associated with any modern resort.
Windsurf Culture
Costa Teguise has a thriving windsurf scene and is frequented by windsurfing professionals each summer to compete in the PWA windsurf world cup, the freestyle and super-X events are held here.
